Kansas City Chiefs Player Kills Self and Girlfriend at Arrowhead Stadium, Police Say

Arrowhead Stadium, the home of the Kansas City Chiefs, was placed on lockdown early Saturday morning after police say a player shot and killed himself after fatally shooting his girlfriend at a house nearby.

Police confirm the player has died.

The female victim is reported to be in critical condition and has been identified as the player’s girlfriend.

Police have not released the identity of the player, but have confirmed that he is a 25-year-old team member.

The team later released a statement on the shooting.

After gaining a much-needed boost of confidence, the Cincinnati Bengals have a prime chance to lift their playoff hopes.

The Bengals would appear to have a favorable schedule over the next few weeks, beginning with Sunday's visit to the beleaguered Kansas City Chiefs.

Just when it seemed that it might continue its historic trend of inconsistency, Cincinnati pulled off a decisive 31-13 win over defending champion New York Giants last Sunday. Andy Dalton threw a career-high four touchdowns while helping his team end a four-game losing streak, and the Bengals' defense forced four turnovers and sacked Eli Manning four times.

"That was huge for us," defensive tackle Domata Peko said. "We really needed that win. It was important because they're world champions and when you can compete against a team like that, it shows us we can compete against anybody."

Cincinnati has made back-to-back playoff appearances only once in franchise history (1981-82) and will get its chance to make a push toward achieving that goal over the ensuing weeks. The Bengals (4-5) will play their next five games against teams that are currently below .500.

Charles’ huge day lifts Chiefs to first win of season

Ryan Succop (6) celebrated with holder Dustin Colquitt after Succop kicked the game-winning field goal in overtime as the Chiefs beat the Saints 27-24 in New Orleans, the Chiefs’ first victory of the season.

NEW ORLEANS -- Jamaal Charles put up a brave front about his return from last season’s torn ACL, but he revealed the truth Sunday after his most heroic game with the Chiefs.

He had been scared -- petrified, really -- that he would never be the same player he was before the injury, that he wouldn’t have the same speed, the same burst, the same ability to make defenders miss and get a big play.

Charles no longer doubts himself after he had a breakout game, rushing for 233 yards in a 27-24 overtime win over the Saints that well could have saved Kansas City’s season.

“I didn’t trust myself (until Sunday),’’ Charles said. “It really hit me when I started getting the runs. I started trusting myself.

“I kind of feel like the old me, especially breaking that long run and finishing it. It’s motivating me more that I still have my speed and I still can run the long ones.’’

Charles had a bigger game in 2009 when the Chiefs finished their season by beating Denver. He ran that day for a team-record 259 yards and could have had more had he not pulled himself from the game in the fourth quarter.
